American, Canadian, Australian and British companies are restructuring their service delivery models by setting up Global In-house Centers (GICs) in the Philippines to reduce cost and increase efficiency. Also known as captive centers or shared service centers, GIC's enable companies access to skilled labor, to increase process control and significantly reduce cost.
GIC's initially engaged in back office, administrative or call center services, but due to the ability for companies to retain full process control, capabilities have grown to include high level functions in IT, banking, healthcare, insurance, research, software development and engineering services.
The proven success of the GIC model over the past 15 years has fueled the industry in the Philippines to grow at an annual rate of over 30% with no signs of slowing down. Foundational to the success of the GIC model has been the country's colleges and universities graduating over 500,000 well educated, English speaking students per year. In addition, fueling the growth has been the Philippine government's commitment to supporting the industry with improved IT infrastructure, enhanced utilities, public transportation growth and an increase of class A commercial office space.
